Jill Daves, Natalya Hughes. is an exhibition of new paintings and site specific installations by Los Angeles based artist Jill Daves and Sydney's Natalya Hughes. Common to each artist’s practice is a preoccupation with pattern, repetition, and the spatial implications of art. Each artist creates work that oscillates between the gallery and the wall, between overlay and intervention, between theory and practice. In this exhibition, the two artists have engaged each other’s practice to create a symbiotic, yet contradictory, relationship.

EXHIBITOR BIOS

JILL DAVES is a Los Angeles based artist whose work is informed by perceptions of seeing, presence, individual awareness, and the ways in which transient time informs or alters physical space. Daves examine theses concepts by inserting repetitive mark making into site-specific installation-based work, paintings, and works on paper incorporating reformatted road maps. She received her MFA from the University of Illinois and has exhibited her site-specific installations, paintings, and works on paper throughout the United States.

NATALYA HUGHES is an Australian artist based in Sydney. She works mainly in painting, digital media, and installation. Her work has been exhibited in numerous group shows including 'Contemporary Australia: Women' at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane and SEXES at Performance Space, Sydney. Recent solo exhibitions include: 'Looking Thrice Full' at Milani Gallery, Brisbane; 'Bachelor Pad’s' at Alaska Projects, Sydney; and 'Looking Full' at Beam, Melbourne. Natalya completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane in 2001 and a PhD in Art Theory at the College of Fine Art (UNSW) in 2009. She is represented by Milani Gallery, Brisbane. She currently teaches in Photography and Situated Media at UTS, Sydney.
